David Roger Cerchie

September 07, 1946 ~ September 08, 2025

David Roger Cerchie of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, September 8, 2025, following complications from multiple strokes. He was 79.

Born in Joplin, Missouri, on September 7, 1946, David earned his undergraduate degree in marketing before completing his J.D. at the University of Tulsa. He began his professional career practicing law in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he became known for his meticulous title-opinion work and his sharp ability to see opportunities others might miss.

In 1994, with a group of close friends, he co-founded VersaFlex, a company that grew into a leader in polyurea and protective coating technologies. Under David’s steady hand and long-view pragmatism, the business expanded from an entrepreneurial gamble into an industry-defining enterprise, before eventually joining the PPG family of companies.

After the sale of VersaFlex, David and his wife Lorene settled in Vero Beach, where he poured his energy into new endeavors. He continued his lifelong passion for cycling, often logging close to ninety miles a week. He found a natural home with Bike Walk Indian River County, where he served as Treasurer and lent his time and steady presence to the group’s efforts. Whether working on grant proposals, keeping the books in order, or helping with donated bikes, he valued being part of an organization that encouraged safe cycling and mobility for all.

David also carried a deep commitment to his spiritual practice. As a longtime practitioner in the Vipassana tradition, he became an assistant teacher, sharing with sincerity — and a touch of trademark persistence — his belief in the power of meditation. For him, meditation was not simply an exercise but a way of living with presence and clarity, a discipline he felt could benefit everyone.

David was rarely ill and took no medications, remaining one of the most vibrant and healthy seventy-somethings you could hope to meet. His sudden decline from multiple strokes was an unimaginable loss to those who knew and admired his vitality.

There will be no formal service, but those who wish to honor David’s memory may do so through contributions to Bike Walk Indian River County.

David was an exceptional person in many, many ways. He was brilliant, kind, thoughtful and really cared about others. I have met very few other people in my life that I like or respect as much as David. I’m very disappointed in myself for not doing a better job staying in touch with him over the last couple of years. I thought there would also be time “later.” I will miss him deeply.

Dear David,
I thought we would have more time together and I am going to miss that time we would have shared together. It is a hole in my heart. I’ll always remember your wise counsel and enjoy times watching you wrenching on a bike in the heat of the warehouse. You were the consummate southern gentleman that I will try to imitate. I am so lucky and will forever be grateful to have worked with David as a fellow board member of Bike Walk over the years. There was never a job he wasn’t willing and extremely capable of doing or help accomplish. I will always remember and be inspired by his thoughtful intelligence, wisdom, humor, integrity, and generosity, and will miss him greatly.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
