In Loving Memory of
David Nicholas Pratchenko, 77, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on October 27, 2026. He was born on August 9, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, to Norma and Nick Pratchenko. David will be remembered for his quick wit, memorable stories, and the laughter he shared with family and friends.
David retired from United Airlines after 28 years of service. The airport held a special place in his heart, and the friendships he formed with the men he worked alongside became a brotherhood. His passion for airplanes was part of everyday life; he could look up at a plane flying overhead and identify its exact model. Through his work, his family had the opportunity to travel to many different places, sharing vacations and creating memories they will always treasure.
His love of fishing began in childhood, passed down to him by his father, and remained with him throughout his life. He especially enjoyed heading out on the boat in the early morning with his friends. Trips to the lake became treasured family getaways, remembered as much for the time spent together as for the fishing.
A gifted storyteller, David could always make people laugh. He loved playing pranks and was always quick with a clever comeback, bringing humor and laughter to those around him. He also enjoyed spending time with the regulars at Pepi’s Pizza Box, sharing stories and laughs over his favorite thin-crust pizza.
At home, his passion for music and love of hosting came together. Gatherings often meant favorite concerts playing loudly on LaserVision discs in the basement, David behind the bar making drinks, and games of darts with his guests. He knew his way around the grill, too, making what his family will always remember as the best cheeseburgers. At holiday gatherings, he was the family’s expert turkey carver—a familiar part of celebrations that his loved ones will fondly remember.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie; his daughters, Gretchen and her husband, Justin, and Kristen; and his five grandchildren, Taylor, Alexandra, Chase, Jayden, and Avianna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norma and Nick Pratchenko, and his two brothers, Danny and Donny.
From family vacations and days at the lake to music-filled evenings at home, David leaves his loved ones with memories of time spent together. His stories, his humor, and his presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Whenever a plane passes overhead, may it bring a fond memory of David—a story he told, a laugh you shared, and a reminder of the memories you’ll always carry.

Beautifully written. Every word told of a wonderful life and family. When he was at the Pizza Box he was always aware that he could not stay long and left his beautiful wife and kids at home. He had a remarkable way of story telling and jokes that rubbed off on Don. When they worked together at Dulles it was a riot. Dave helped me get in to the fire department and introduced Don to me. A friendship that lasted over 45 years. I still laugh when I think of Dave. You will be missed by many.

Valerie, my deepest condolences on Dave’s passing. We worked together at IAD for years in the post office and air freight. Dave was the funniest human being I have ever met! He would crack us all up every day at work. I’m so sorry I hadn’t called to talk to him recently. After he went to DCA we would talk occasionally and after he retired we would have long talks about his health and mine. I’m sure going to miss hearing his voice. He was a great guy and Union brother and he will be missed by all that knew him. RIP Dave.

I had the privilege of working with Dave at IADHH while I was a supervisor at the flight kitchen. He took pride in his work and I knew I could always count on him and his partner when a catering truck issue came up. I can still remember his laughs coming from the break room. He will be sorely missed.

My prayers are with you and your family Valerie. Dave was one of a kind. His sense of humor and quick comebacks have been missed at the airport since his retirement. His jokes, stories and pranks made work fun. At the Pizza Box, bowling alley or anywhere we may have gone after work are cherished memories.
RIP Dave, you were the best!
