Alfred Martin Schmidt, Jr.

May 08, 1930 ~ March 27, 2022

Alfred Martin Schmidt, Jr. died on March 27, 2022 after a short illness.

Born in Hoboken, New Jersey on May 8, 1930, he was the son of Alfred Martin Schmidt, Sr. and Florence Marie Meiners Schmidt. He graduated cum laude from Blair Acacdemy, Blairstown, New Jersey in 1947, and Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1951 where he was member of Phi Delta Theta.

After college, he entered his father’s business, a knitwear manufacturing and importing company, where he had the opportunity to travel the world. Subsequently, he became Vice President of Marketing at Brooks Brothers, Bergdorf Goodman, and later the Franklin Mint. In 1990, he started a catalog consulting firm, The Schmidt Group International. He was a pioneer in the direct marketing field and served clients in the US, Europe, and Asia. As a member of the Direct Marketing Association, he was awarded the prestigious Henry Hoke Award and the DMA Echo Leader Award. He continued his consulting practice until earlier this year.

Al lived life to the fullest. It was a life of laughter and fun. For 60 years he and his wife, Joan Lois Van Duyne Schmidt, raised their children, Christy, Jeffrey, and Jonathan at the Jersey Shore and Mendham, New Jersey. As a family, they enjoyed skiing, tennis, and swimming. Al and Joan loved to play croquet with friends at Green Gables Croquet Club in Spring Lake, New Jersey. He was also an avid golfer and played regularly until a few months before his death.

In his later years, he and Joan moved to Florida and enjoyed life in Vero Beach. When Joan passed away in 2011, he was blessed to meet and marry Mary June Wilkinson in 2013.

Most of all, Al will be remembered for his wit and exceptional sense of humor. He had a unique ability to make every day exciting and memorable.

Al is predeceased by his wife, Joan, and great grandson, Curtis Hatley. He is survived by his children and their spouses Christy Morford (Richard), Jeffrey (Carmel), and Jonathan (Jackie). Al is survived by 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his wife Mary June and her children and spouses, William Scott (Jill), Susan Wilkinson, John (Lois), Julie Wilkinson Wells (Todd), and Sarah Wilkinson Hughes (Brad). Mary June also has 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
