Mrs. Beverly Marie Hanner, 78, gained eternal life on December 20, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach, FL, from the complications of amyloidosis. She was a retired science teacher.
She was born in Seymour, Indiana on December 8, 1946, the daughter of Raymond “Bud” Emily and Jeanette Kilgas Emily. She married James Richard “Jim” Hanner on June 5, 1976, in Clear Spring, Indiana, and he survives. She is also survived by her sisters, Linda (Terry) McDaniel and Tressia (Mark) Roberts; a brother- and sister-in-law, Bruce and Susi (Hanner) Willis; and brothers-in-law Talmadge Reynolds and David Sawyers, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters (Karen Emily, Trudy Reynolds, and Ramona Sawyers), a brother (Raymond Emily Jr.), and a nephew (Travis Reynolds).
Mrs. Hanner was a 1969 graduate of Indiana State University (ISU), with Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and General Science. She obtained her Master of Sciences in Education from ISU in 1971. She earned a Science Curriculum Specialist designation from Florida State University in 1974. She also participated in Genetics/DNA and Chemistry Instrumentation workshops at the University of Illinois in 1992 and 1993-1994, respectively.
Mrs. Hanner enjoyed a successful career in education. She taught science at Bailey Junior High School in Gary, Indiana from 1970 to 1972. She accepted a teaching position with the Urbana Illinois School District #116 in 1972, which she held until her retirement in August 2002. During her tenure there, she served as district science chairperson. She also served on several other district committees, including the committee for the inclusion of special education students. She was a consultant for the State of Illinois Office of Education and was a literacy specialist for the Regional Office of Education. She attended and made presentations at conferences and workshops at the national, state, and local levels.
Ever devoted to her students, Mrs. Hanner was a sponsor of various student committees and organizations, including the science club, cheerleaders, and the school newspaper. She set goals for students and would reward them with trips to amusement parks, where she would assist them with making calculations surrounding roller coaster physics. .When an at-risk student would ask her to stay after school with them until their parents came home, she would not hesitate to do so.
Her husband, family and friends enjoyed her wonderful cooking. Family members treasured the gifts of her impeccably crafted cross-stitch napkins, towels, and pictures, as well as homemade jams and jellies that they received at Christmas time.
Mrs. Hanner requested cremation and there will be no services at this time. Her wish is for her husband, Jim, and her to have a joint service after his passing, with burial in his family’s plot at Shields Cemetery in Oakland, Illinois.
The family suggest that gifts in memory of Mrs. Hanner be made to the Amyloidosis Research Consortium at www.arci.org/donate, the American Heart Association at www.heart.org, or the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org.
