Elizabeth Walker Stewart, age 86, of Vero Beach, FL, died May 10, 2025.
Elizabeth was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1939 to Horace Walker and Elizabeth Geggis. Betty, as she was affectionately known, attended Girls’ High and, following graduation, attended secretarial school. In 1958, she married Frederick Stewart Jr., and they were married for 67 years. Before the birth of her three children, Betty worked for the Philadelphia Electric Company, and later, when the children were in elementary school, she took a position with Philco-Ford. Betty also attended Montgomery County Community College, earning an associate’s degree. From the mid-1970s until her retirement in 1991, Betty worked at Thomas Jefferson University in the Office of Institutional Advancement.
In retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling with her husband Fred to over 30 countries on six continents. She delighted in playing with her grandchildren and could often be found walking them to a playground or the dollar store. In the kitchen, her grandchildren were always excited to help her make bread or use the juicer with her.
Betty was a member of the Daughters of the King and spent many hours volunteering for St. David’s by the Sea in Cocoa Beach, FL.
Elizabeth Stewart is survived by her husband Frederick, brother Carl Walker (Louise), children Frederick Stewart III (Susan Lynn), Elizabeth Stewart Tate (Gerald) Christine Stewart McCourt (Russell Schmidt); grandchildren, Samuel Tate (Lauren) Stephanie, Benjamin, Trinity, Gabe and Rachel; great-grandchildren Liam and Noah.

Miss you Mom! I was very lucky growing up with you as my mother. You were a wonderful role model, returning to work after Christine started elementary school and juggling the many responsibilities that come with motherhood. You also returned to school to get an associate’s degree. You worked many long days returning home, cooking meals and then helping us with homework. You bailed us out of last minute, late night school reports, feverishly typing on your IBM Selectric so that we could turn it in on time.
You were a fun and adventurous Girl Scout leader and made troop trips to Florida, Virginia, Tennessee and out west, an educational, cultural and physical journey. I also learned to be thrifty both on these trips and everytime we went to the grocery store.
And what can I say about walking? You lived up to your maiden name with every step. We walked everywhere with you. I believe that my love of hiking and public transportation, whether I was traveling into Philly or in a European city, was inspired by you.
You were the ultimate grandmother when it came to my children, Sam and Stephanie. You helped them grow and explore their world. They have so many wonderful memories of trips around the Philadelphia area, Florida or just a local trip to the dollar store. You also constantly let them make a mess in your kitchen, whether making bread or juicing oranges. I hope to follow in your footsteps with my own grandchildren, Liam and Noah.
I miss you Mom and treasure all the time I got to spend with you. Love you now and always.

Aunt Betty was a part of many wonderful memories from my childhood, from organizing family gatherings in Abington or Ocean City to walks on the beach and other adventures, and she always found just the right birthday present. I enjoyed hearing tales of her travels and work at Jefferson. I look forward to watch again our Walker-Stewart videos from Pop-pop’s pictures and to re-reading Stories from Grandmom. And she was so graceful even when faced with my father’s antics, like spaghetti ice cream or “falling” into the pool at Uncle George’s. I was so glad she was able to come to Italy when I finally got married and to spend time with my daughter.
Much love, Keith

Although we must. have played together on Delhi St., my earliest real memory of Betty is of a dinner with she and Fred on Durham (?) St. It was when we were dating and they were first married. I hadn’t seen Betty for many years. Was I impressed — a young bride entrtaining us in her own home. After we were married we enjoyed many wonderful dinner gatherings with Betty. She will be missed.
Love you, Betty.
