On the spring evening of March 20th 2024, our sweet “Poppy”, Eugene Desposito 89, left this world to join the ancestors. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by the tender love and care of his family. Born in Brooklyn and raised by his parents, Anthony and Jen Desposito, Gene, and his pre-deceased older brother, Joseph Desposito, spent summers fishing, swimming, and crabbing in the Hudson River at their weekend home in Haverstraw, NY.
Gene served eight years as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Upon his honorable discharge, he met and married the late Elinor Meehan and raised their three sons, Eugene, Andrew, and late Robert in Stony Point, NY. Over Gene’s lengthy 70 year career, his early life as a butcher transitioned to professional meat trader. After roles in management, and then a senior V.P. position at Global Distribution, he launched his own successful company and was known for being a trusted advisor and respected colleague and friend.
In 1995, Gene and his wife, Isabelle Devlin Desposito, and stepdaughter Elizabeth sought sunny, salty skies in the ocean town of Vero Beach, FL. Here together they built a happy life full of golfing, fishing, and cooking. Along with his sons, and stepdaughter Jaina, her partner Robert , daughter-in-law Rochelle, son-in-law Evan, and grandchildren Robbie, his partner Ni , Flynn, Reese, and Gabrielle, many visitors could be found at Poppy’s dinner table enjoying his homemade spaghetti and meatballs.
All throughout his long, beautiful years you could always count on Gene for incredible stories of a life well lived, and a few wise-cracks for good measure. His big warm smile and kind heart made him beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He loved his hobbies, his work, and most of all his family. It’s hard to imagine our lives without him, but we will carry his joyful spirit into everything we do. Safe journey, dear Poppy. We will miss you forever.
A private mass will be held in Vero Beach, and a public memorial will be held later this summer in Montclair, NJ.
