Joan Sparr McCain

January 15, 1941 ~ April 20, 2022

Joan Sparr McCain, 81, of Vero Beach, FL, went peacefully to Heaven early Wednesday morning, April 20, 2022. Joan was born January 15, 1941 in Akron, Ohio to Benjamin Ralph Sparr and Ruth Foote Sparr. She has been a resident of Vero Beach for over 30 years. When the family moved to FL, Joan attended Melbourne High School.

One of her first jobs was as a car hop at A&W Drive-in. She also worked as a radio advertising salesperson for many years in Melbourne and Vero Beach. She and her husband, Terry McCain, worked and traveled together as property management trainers. Joan eventually joined her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Ronald Rathbun, in the real estate field. However, her most enjoyable occupation, for more than 10 years before retiring in 2015, was owning and operating a bookstore in Vero beach with her daughter Julie, and her granddaughter Alex, whom all shared a love of reading. Yet, anyone that had the privilege of knowing Joan, knew that her real love was spending quality time with her family; related, non-related, and extended because she loved and accepted everyone as Joan never met a stranger.

Joan is survived by her sister, Diane Sparr of Vero Beach, FL; her children, Richard Norman (Mitzie) of Palm Bay, FL, Jeffery Norman (Tammy) of Palm Bay, FL, Julie Norman Payne (Timothy) of Vero Beach, FL, Stephen McCain (Ramona) of Merritt Island, FL; grandchildren, Darcie Norman Brown (Mark),  Alexandra Joy Compton Norman, Tarrah LaPolla (Keith), Jamie Baird, Jonathan Reese (Pamella); and her great grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathaniel LaPolla and Cora and Jake Brown; her niece, Anita Dieringer (Ed), nephews Jim and Lee Rathbun; great niece Andrea Jaswa and great nephew Andrew Dieringer.

Joan is predeceased by her husband Henry Tearah McCain; her children Terri Lynn and Scott McCain, her parents, Benjamin and Ruth Sparr, her siblings Ralph Sparr (Margaret); Betty Jane Rathbun (Ronald); and niece Phyllis Sparr-Jaswa.

Donations in Joan’s name can be made to The VNA Hospice Treasure Coast. www.vnatc.org

I am glad to have met Joan. It is true, she never met a stranger; always made me feel like we knew each other. She was such a kind and welcoming person. My sincere sympathy.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
