Mary Jane (Vance) Grant

September 18, 1943 ~ August 20, 2021

“MJ” or “Ami” to those who loved her most, passed away peacefully at home on August, 20, 2021, with her daughter by her side.

Born September 18, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio, she moved to New York City “forty-five minutes” after graduating from The Ohio State University. She loved her career in fashion as a buyer for Bloomingdale’s until her parents convinced her to move to Boca Raton to open a luxury children’s boutique.

She married Gene Grant and they had two children together, Jennifer and Peter. Mary Jane resided in Boca Raton and Delray Beach before moving to Vero Beach in 2007.

She enjoyed traveling the world and ultimately settled in Martha’s Vineyard as her summer residence for the past 27 years. At the Edgartown Yacht Club, she treasured serving on Race Committee keeping the time for many a regatta and particularly enjoyed the thrill of the 12 Meters races.

Known for her love of the arts and as a selfless volunteer for many causes near and dear to her heart, MJ led a life of giving and for many years served as Treasurer for the Palm Beach County Community Foundation.

One of her biggest devotions was to Riverside Theatre. She relished being a Patron Producer and every step of production from auditions in New York City and getting to know the cast to watching their performances develop and enjoying every show at least three times. MJ especially loved sharing her passion with her family and friends.

MJ loved to be around interesting people – she delighted in her numerous book clubs, red wine, water aerobics and the wide assortment of friendships that grew from her wit and joie de vivre.

Her greatest joy in life was undoubtedly spending time with her daughter, Jennifer, and granddaughters, Avery and Millicent. She was a constant source of love and support. Ami never missed an event, knew all of their friends and teachers, and passed on immeasurable wisdom to “her girls.”

Mary Jane is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Grant, granddaughters, Avery and Millicent Critchfield, and son, Peter Grant.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made on her behalf to her beloved Riverside Theatre.

MJ was one of kind. Sincere, fun loving, energetic and she had such a zest for life. I have known her for over 20 years. We spoke often and it was always such a joy to get a call from her. We spoke about life, politics and family; and always hung up with a smile on our face. She loved Jen and her grand children so much and was so proud of all of you. She will be sorely missed by many – for her adventurous spirit and her generosity. My deepest condolences. Colleen Cameron

My funny, smart, and intelligent buddy — MJ! You will be missed, tremendously. Your devotion to your family, your darling grands, plus the ARTS will always hold a sweet spot in my heart. We had such fun with our MARCO POLO theme at the Polo Match — we almost took first place. I loved going to opening night at Riverside with you — nothing better than that! We coordinated an author visit for Linda Fairstein at Quail too! Such fun to chat and share opinions.
Girls, your mom, and grandmom…such a gem. God Bless you all.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
