Michael “Mike” Charles Hyde

September 16, 1938 ~ August 23, 2021

Michael “Mike” Charles Hyde, 82, of Vero Beach and formerly New Jersey, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2021 at his home.
Mike was born on September 16, 1938 in Englewood, New Jersey to Edward and Florence Hyde. From an early age, he developed what became a lifelong appreciation for cars, motorcycles, boats, and machinery. After graduating from Tenafly High School in 1956, Mike joined the Seafarers International Union and worked his way to become Chief Pumpman. His career as a Merchant Seaman took him around the globe and only intensified his passion for life on the water and building and assembling things. Mike and his high school sweetheart, JoAnn, married in October 1960 and had five children: Michael (Christine), Jimmy (Lisa), Tommy (Tanya), Janine (Dane), and Steven (Sandra). In 1968 the family relocated from Tenafly to Alpine, New Jersey. During this time, Mike worked as a Master Machinist, as well as a volunteer firefighter with the Alpine Fire Department, ultimately leaving as a Chief. With aspirations to move to Florida, Mike pursued a job opportunity with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, where he worked as a Prototype Machinist until his retirement in 2002. Mike designed and built countless tools and implements for manned submersibles and remotely-operated vehicles. Since retiring, he enjoyed being a member of the Porsche Owners Club of America and spending time with his kids and grandkids as often as possible.
Mike is survived by his wife of 61 years, JoAnn, his children, nine grandchildren: Megan (Hunter), Jordan (Jordan), Rena (Stephen), Will (Chelsea), Jake (Taylor), Ty (Princess), Chandler (Micha), Mary (Julian), Lucy, and Charlee; seven great-grandchildren: Zedeline, Ryder, Lila, William, Henry, Sophie, and Rayce; his sister Susan, a brother-in-law Pete and sister-in-law June; cousin, Robert Helder, numerous nephews and nieces, and his beloved sixth child, his chihuahua, Lucas.
At this time, there will be no service. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.
Of his many accomplishments throughout a well-lived life, Mike’s family brought him his biggest sense of pride and achievement. He instilled countless values, particularly that of hard work, tenacity, and an appreciation for the simple things such as a cool breeze on any given day. He was a devoted Chieftain and his guidance and love will be greatly missed by his entire Clan.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hyde family. I always had great admiration for the magic Mr. Hyde could do in the machine shop…on the moments notice we gave him, as the research vessel was about to sail! Fair Winds and Following Seas, Mr. Hyde.

My sincerest sympathy to the entire family. Mike was a very good natured man and always kind to me. During my few bumbling forays into his machine shop at Harbor Branch, Mike always, always made time to teach me how to use a machine tool and help me complete my task. And always with a smile on his face. I really appreciated that and will never forget it.

Dear JoAnn, Michael, Steve and all the Hyde family.
We offer our sincere sympathies on your loss.
We always considered those of us who sailed at HBOI as part of a sea going family. Mike was as much a part of that family as any. Precision parts he made kept us going and safe above all else.
Love to you all.

Dear Steven and the Hyde family.
I had the pleasure to have known Mike the entire time he was at Harbor Branch. He helped design and build many of the tools and gizmos that we used with the submersibles for out research. He was truly gifted and a wonderful person.
My best wishes to the family.

What a fine neighbor and friend we had in Mike. It was always a joy to sit and talk with Mike about his cars and his mechanical knowledge, and to enjoy a warm day together with him in a shady spot. JoAnn, we are so sad with you and your family during these tender days of loss for you. We love you, and we will keep you and yours in our prayers. May you treasure the sweet memories Mike has given you, and may the tender hurts heal with a lasting fullness of love. God bless you and keep you, JoAnn. We love you.

I met Mr Hyde through his son and a best friend Jimmy when we were 14. He was the dad that was super cool. Mr Hyde would share his projects at Harbor Branch. It was like he worked for Jaucque Cousteau. He was a great example of a good human. Honest and witty is how I remember him.
Happy Birthday 09/16!!

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
