Michael “Mike” Smith

May 05, 1962 ~ March 11, 2022

Michael “Mike” Smith, 59, passed from this world to the next on March 11, 2022.  Mike was a long-time resident of Vero Beach, Florida and enjoyed many adventures here.  Mike was born on May 5, 1962 in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Vero Beach when he was 17 years old.   Mike worked for many years for the City of Vero Beach as an irrigation specialist.  He left the outside to work inside in food services at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.  Mike was lucky that at the age of 43 he received a pancreas/kidney transplant that then blessed him with 16 years of good health.  While being flown to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida for his transplant by Angel Flight, he fell in love with flying.  He later became a spokesperson for Angel Flight (and got to meet Mrs. Georgia!) and was blessed to become a pilot.  He loved flying and missed it when it was no longer an option for him.  Mike was predeceased by his Father, Murray Smith, and his niece, Nikki Durling.  Mike is survived by his Mother, Nancy Cran; his sisters, Cindy Rednour (Chuck), Susan Durling (Mark), Lisa Mroz (Michael), and Jean Feathers (Michael) and many nieces and nephews.  Yes, “Michael” is a popular name in our family and we wish our Michael Smith a peaceful rest until we meet again.  The family suggests that any donations in Mike’s memory be made to UF Health Shands Transplant Center.

Nancy and family, I was so sad when I saw that Mike had passed away. The last time I saw him was at Saint Helens Church, and he seemed so very happy. Grandma and Grandpa Cran were very special neighbors to me and I bet Mike is there with them now. My condolences go out to everyone, may You find comfort knowing he is now in Gods hands and no longer suffering.

I met Micheal at Indian River Hospital about 7 years ago. We worked together. He was so friendly and always smiling, laughing and joking throughout the day. Our patients loved to talk to him and said what a kind voice he had. He will be missed. Now he can fly forever.

Mike was the greatest neighbor anyone could ask for. He always was there for you and always with that big clown smile it was the best. The two years of shooting air rifles and watching old plane movies which I had no idea what I was watching are truly missed and I know it’s good to know your finally at peace in your heart and I know your smiling down on us all.

I was so sorry to see that Mike passed away. He was such an amazing soul. I worked with him back in 2010 at IRMC in the kitchen. He was always such a friendly guy. Patients would always request to speak with him, his demeanor made them feel seen and cared for. God bless his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. Fly high my friend.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
