Nelson Thomas Redfern 91 passed away Saturday, July 15, 2023 in Vero Beach, Florida.
Nelson was born November 3, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Nelson Redfern and Rose Martin-Redfern. He graduated from Putnam High School in Putnam, Connecticut. After graduation he served 3 years in the United States Coast Guard. Upon being discharged from the Coast Guard, Nelson began an over 30 year career with the Package Machine Co. in Massachusetts. He retired as Vice President of Human Services in 1994.
It was in 1994 that he traded in the cold winters of Massachusetts for the year-long summer of North Hutchinson Island in Ft. Pierce, Florida. He lived on the island until 2015 when he relocated to Vero Beach.
Those that knew and loved Nelson most describe him as highly intelligent, humorous and regarded him as a kindhearted man. He loved gardening and planting and tending to an acre of fruit trees and vegetable patches. Nelson was an incredible chef, talented tennis player and downright unbeatable in the game of cribbage.
A student of computers, Nelson spent many hours of his retirement creating humorous greeting cards and cups to commemorate special occasions with family and friends.
Nelson was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Sandecki; his parents and daughter-in-law, JiWan. He was also preceded in death by his beloved dog, Bailey (see photo), who died just 16 days before Nelson.
He is survived by his wife of 4.5 years, Janice Mooney Redfern; sons, Dean (Rosann) Redfern of Greenville, South Carolina and Scott Redfern of Daejeon, South Korea; grandsons, James Redfern of South Korea and Richard Redfern of Vero Beach, Florida; and sister, Linda Boucher of Connecticut.
Nelson will be remembered for his quick wit, the love he showed his grandsons and the joy he brought to the lives of others.

Nelson and Bailey were among our first friends in the Riverwind community. They were friendly and generous. We particularly loved the monthly celebrations of Janice and Nelson’s wedding anniversary! They are both missed.
Our condolences are extended to Janice, his beautiful bride of 50 months.❤️

My deepest and heartfelt condolences to Nelson’s family. We grew up in Hazardville, CT and our families were very close. Nelson’s mother, Rose, was secretary to my dad in his bookkeeping profession and my brother, sister and I went to school with Nelson and Linda. After his move to FL we kept in touch via phone and email and I had the opportunity to visit with Nelson and Janice on a couple of occasions in FL. Nelson sent funny birthday cards, always including Bailey, of course. May the memories you have of Nelson sustain you in the days ahead.
