Richard Escalera

August 17, 1931 ~ May 11, 2026

Richard Escalera, age 94, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026. Born on August 17, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, Richard was the son of Manuel and Emily Escalera, who came from proud Puerto Rican roots that deeply shaped the values, traditions, and sense of family he carried throughout his life. He was also the beloved brother of Humbert Escalera.

Richard proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in New York City as a coffee commodity trader. His work took him all over the world, allowing him to build relationships across continents and develop a deep appreciation for global cultures and the people behind the coffee trade. He was widely respected for his expertise, integrity, and dedication.

Outside of his professional life, Richard had a great love for golf, baseball, and traveling with his wife Elizabeth. These passions brought him joy and countless cherished memories.

He was the devoted husband of Elizabeth Escalera, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. Richard was a cherished father to Belinda Morris (and her husband, Ron Morris), Doug Escalera (and his wife, Andrea Escalera), and Patricia Escalera Burgener (and her husband, Paul Burgener).

Richard’s greatest joy came from his grandchildren, whom he adored: Chris Morris (and his wife, Kristine) and Julia Morris, Anna Maria Fretz (and her husband, Noah Fretz), Olivia Escalera, Elizabeth Burgener, Isabelle Burgener, Samuel Burgener.

His legacy lives on in the generations who follow him and in the many lives he touched throughout his travels, his work, and his rich Puerto Rican heritage. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

A true testimony of a life well lived and loved. I was blessed to call this gentle and spunky man my friend and I won’t ever forget his lovely demeanor and devotion to his family. May God bless and keep the family at this sad time.

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
